According to the police, they are tracking the gunmen.
During an ambush on a roadblock on Friday morning in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, gunmen shot and killed four police officers.
It was reported that the incident had also claimed the lives of two ladies.
The attacked checkpoint is located along Hilltop/Nwoke Road, next to an Ebyia Bridge petrol station.
This is the checkpoint’s second attack; the first happened a year ago and resulted in the deaths of around two people.
The road goes to Governor Francis Nwifuru’s rural residence and serves as a main entry point into the city.
The state’s police spokesperson, Joshua Ụkandu, verified the event in a statement and stated that the agents were attacked while doing a stop-and-search duty.
He stated that the attackers were thought to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the secessionist organization’s militia branch, the Eastern Security Network.
According to Mr. Ụkandu, the gunmen intermittently fired shots at the agents who engaged them in a gunfight.
During the subsequent gunfight, the criminals fled and left behind a pump action rifle that was later found. But two bystanders were murdered in the crossfire, and four of the agents paid the ultimate price,” he continued.
According to the spokesperson, Augustina Ogbodo, the Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State, quickly sent tactical teams to the area of the incident, and as a result, the police are currently pursuing the gunmen.
“She is using this platform to encourage the state’s law-abiding citizens to furnish the command with crucial intelligence that may aid in the capture of the runaway criminals and guaranteed that the command is unwaveringly committed to protecting lives and property in the state,” he continued.
